What’s on in Aguilas October 2024
Concerts, a huge variety of free guided visits and a wide range of cultural events as Águilas settles into autumn...
In many Mediterranean coastal resorts it is fair to say that the arrival of October brings with it the closure until the following spring of many of the restaurants, events venues and other items of interest to visitors and locals, but in Águilas in the south-west of the Region of Murcia this is far from being the case.
In fact, in many ways this the start of the season in Águilas, but not the summer season when the town is swamped by beachgoers and sunseekers. Instead, the magnificent seafront auditorium is now back with its program for the 2024-25 season, which this month alone features Spanish drama, a Lion King musical, Sesame Street and Swan Lake, and two jazz concerts are taking place at the Casino.
At the same time there is a plethora of free guided tours during the month, showcasing the fascinating places and history of the town and the whole municipality, and of course IF the weather plays ball there is still time to enjoy an afternoon on the beach and a dip in the Med - remember, the air temperature is cooler now, but the sea is still warm!
Below is the agenda for October 24 in Águilas (which is likely to be modified as the month progresses):
Free guided tours in Águilas during the month of August
Saturday October 5, free guided tour of the historic town centre of Águilas
Start: Tourist Office at 11.00.
Duration: approximately 2 hours.
This tour takes participants through the port and Plaza de España and past important monuments and buildings, such as the Ícaro (Carnival monument), Ferrocarril monument, Archaeological Museum and church of San José. The tour is suitable for those of limited mobility.
Further information here: bookings for this tour throughout the year should be made here or through the tourist office.
Sunday October 13, guided tour of the castle of San Juan de Águilas
Start: 11.00 at the tourist office
The 18th century castle of San Juan is one of the most visible and important monuments of Águilas, offering both an insight into the town’s history and fabulous views over the town itself and the Mediterranean.
Further info can be found here. Reservations to take part in the free visit should be made through the regional tourist board here.
Comfortable clothing and footwear, a hat, water and sun cream are already advisable at this time of year!
Saturday October 19, the Mr Gillman and El Hornillo railways tour
Starts outside the auditorium at 11.00.
Duration: approximately 2 hours.
Bookings: through the Region of Murcia tourist board here or through the tourist office.
This tour allows participants to experience the history of the traders and industrialists who played such an important role in the economy of Águilas in the second half of the 19th century and the first 30 years of the 20th, among them Gustavo Gillman. The route includes the Monument to the Railway, the bridge over the Rambla de las Culebras, the Sendero del Hornillo and the museum which has been created in the railway tunnel, which led to the Embarcadero del Hornillo loading jetty.

Sunday October 27, Marina de Cope walking tour

Duration and difficulty: approximately 2 and a half hours; 4.7 kilometres. Low level of difficulty.
Further info here. Bookings: through the Murcia tourist board here or through the tourist office.
This walk takes place in the regional park of Cabo Cope and Puntas del Calnegre, allowing participants to enjoy the natural scenery on offer, as well as walking through nesting areas for different bird species and Roman remains.
Every Saturday, visit the iconic Embarcadero del Hornillo railway loading jetty
The iconic 120-year-old railway loading jetty of the Embarcadero de Hornillo has recently been opened to visits from members of the public since early June last year. The first phase of the project to restore the jetty was completed shortly beforehand and much of its former glory (and structural stability) has been recovered.
As a result non-guided visits are now permitted, and throughout this month they take place between 11.00 and 13.00.
This timetable is susceptible to modification according to demand. Registration for these free visits is currently through the Águilas tourist office (telephone 968 493285) only but it is hoped that an online facility is soon to be added.
Free tours with fully qualified guided Anabel López Belmonte
Due to a regional government grant Anabel is able to offer three visiting routes completely free of charge throughout the month of October, at any time of day. In addition to knowing everything there is to know about the municipality, she also speaks English!
The three tours are:
Embarcadero del Hornillo y Entorno: the history and fascinating anecdotes related to the loading jetty which is still one of the leading landmarks in Águilas and one of the most spectacular civil engineering works in the industrial history of Spain.
