Warmer spring weather means the mosquitoes are back in the Region of Murcia
Murcia town councils are out in force, treating public areas as a preventative measure and advising how some simple steps at home can help

The sun is finally shining and spring is in the air but that usually means mosquitoes are starting to appear. Local councils have begun their usual control campaigns across towns and natural areas. Residents are also encouraged to do their part, as keeping these insects under control works best when everyone helps.
San Pedro del Pinatar and Los Alcázares, both close to the Mar Menor, have started preventive treatments in drains, grids, public spaces, and natural areas. Councils advise making sure there is no standing water around homes, emptying plant saucers, and checking containers or objects that can collect moisture.
There are also other simple steps that make a big difference. Swimming pools should be treated with chlorine, wells and water tanks covered with mesh, and animal water bowls refreshed every two or three days. Gutters can collect water too, so it is worth checking them regularly. And of course, don’t forget the little ones, protecting children with insect repellent and suitable clothing is important as well.
During March, these towns, together with Cartagena and inland municipalities such as Archena, Las Torres de Cotillas, and Alhama de Murcia, have shared information with residents about how to reduce mosquito risks. The main concern is the tiger mosquito, which can transmit diseases like dengue, Zika, and chikungunya, but other insects such as sandflies and ticks are also present.
With a bit of help from councils and a few simple steps at home, mosquito numbers can be kept down, making the warmer months much more enjoyable.
