VIDEO: British ice-cream van seized in Benidorm for operating without food licence
The Britons were selling food in and around Levante beach without any health checks or permits
The sun has been shining for the last few days and as a result, Benidorm’s beaches, streets and pubs have been packed with holidaymakers. And what better way to cool down than with a delicious, chilled ice-cream or lolly? Well, if you’ve made a purchase from an ice-cream van recently, you might want to look away now.
Police in Benidorm pulled over an English food van for inspection that had been spotted driving around the city and selling sweet treats to tourists on the famous Levante beach. According to Local Police’s Enrique Tortosa, officers wasted no time in seizing the vehicle when they realised it was completely unlicensed to sell food.
They found a huge amount of perishable food on board but virtually no hygiene or sanitary controls, so every item was confiscated and presumably destroyed.
Benidorm’s police force have dubbed the British vehicle the ‘Barbie’ van because of its bright pink colour, and have posted a vehicle online to remind everyone that food should only be bought from authorised establishments – in other words, places that comply with safety standards.
They have also urged locals to contact the authorities if they suspect a food truck might be operating illegally in the area.
