Three holiday destinations to avoid in Spain in 2025
Due to overcrowding, people are recommended to stay clear of these three tourist hotspots
In 2024, from January to November, 98.3 million international tourists arrived in Spain to explore the beautiful southern European country. These figures were recorded by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism and show the growing appeal that the country has for international holidaymakers.
More and more travellers are coming to the Spanish shores to experience the charms and beauty of the country. However, the growing tourism has brought a number of problems to the country, as many places have become overcrowded with travellers over the past 12 months.
The sheer number of people travelling to certain places in Spain has brought about a negative reaction from the residents of the cities that cannot deal with so many tourists on the streets. For this reason, the Fodor magazine has published its annual list of 'Destinations not to travel to' and three of the places are in Spain.
According to the magazine, there are parts of Spain that have become highly tense and the residents of these areas have had enough of mass tourism. Barcelona is a city which has turned against the tourist population that continues to come to the city. Rental prices have risen by 68% over the last decade in the city and some locals see this as a reason for the increase in house prices.
This resentment towards the tourist has meant that it is a place to avoid in 2025, despite the fact that many believe the anti-tourism sentiment is misplaced as house prices soar throughout Europe. Nevertheless, this destination is the first on the list of holiday areas to avoid.
Second on the list is the Canary Islands. The islands are becoming more and more crowded each year and despite the tourism sector representing 35% of the GDP for the Island and generating 17 billion euros, the locals have had enough of mass tourism and the problems of overcrowding.
Last of the three destinations to avoid for 2025 is Mallorca. Again, due to overcrowding on the island, it is being advised that travellers avoid the sunshine paradise because of the fact that the islanders are not happy with mass tourism. The anti-tourist sentiment continues to grow and the overcrowding is the reason to stay clear of this island in 2025.
There we have it, these three destinations are to be avoided this year if you do not like crowded places where the locals are not going to welcome you with open arms. Luckily, Spain has a whole host of beautiful destinations with less tourism and where the locals greet travellers like old friends. Therefore, if you are planning a trip this year to Spain do not let this list stop you and instead travel to the many places that are not on this list.
