The Alcazaba – Mirador del Castillo viewing point at the site of the castile in Molina de Segura
The site of the 9th century fortress still affords good views over Molina and the Segura plain
The Alcazaba - Mirador del Castillo is the location in Molina de Segura where the remains of the medieval fortress built by the Moors have been found, standing at the top of the small hill which overlooks the River Segura and the fertile agricultural land along its banks.
The remains of the four-sided tower on top of the hill were not discovered until 2006, when they came to light during excavation work, and the foundations have since been built on to partially recreate the original structure. A walk up to the site provides good views, of course, as it did for those who first built the fortress in the 9th century, although the walls which were discovered recently date from the 11th and 12th centuries.
There is now a modern multi-purpose building and a restaurant on the site, which is accessed by a ramp leading up from Calle Vázquez de Mella.
