Seve Ballesteros' 18-hole golf course in Murcia set to reopen after nearly a decade
La Peraleja golf course is preparing to welcome players again this summer, with bookings expected to open towards the end of June

A golf course in the Region of Murcia that many people had written off is now getting ready to reopen, with plans in place to welcome players back this summer.
La Peraleja Golf, which features the only 18-hole course in the Region designed by Severiano Ballesteros, has been closed since 2016. For years, it sat unused while other golf resorts nearby continued to attract players year-round. Now, after nearly a decade, work to bring it back is well underway.
The course originally opened in 2007 and was designed with the local conditions very much in mind. It uses salt-resistant grass, has a strong drainage system, and includes lakes that collect rainwater to help manage irrigation. They planted olive trees and other native vegetation to help the course blend in with the surroundings.
In terms of layout, it is a par 72 course, just over 6,200 metres long, with gentle slopes and well-placed hazards that make it enjoyable to play without being overly difficult.
The focus throughout the restoration has been on getting it back to how it was, rather than changing it. Nothing from Ballesteros' original design has been altered, which is something the team has been keen to preserve.
The project is being led by Mauricio Marín, who took on the role last year. Since then, he has been working closely with the maintenance team to bring the course back up to standard.
If everything stays on track, green fees are expected to go on sale towards the end of June. Like many courses in the Region, it now just needs a bit more consistent warm weather to get the greens into the right condition for play.
Golf remains a big part of the Region, both for those living here and for visitors, and courses like this play an important role in that. The return of La Peraleja not only adds another option, but also brings back a course that already has a name and history behind it. After all this time, it is one that is likely to draw plenty of interest once it reopens.
