Relaxing the Spanish way: How expats and travellers unwind in the digital age
Get into the spirit of your Spanish getaway with these fun activities

Quaint cafes and gorgeous beaches make up most people’s view of Spain. Travellers visit in the spring and summer months, hoping to relax by the sea. Cocktails and wine are a given for most tourists. Of course, many are there to experience the local cuisine as well. Seafood and tapas and much more wait in the lovely country of Spain.
However, the digital age has largely changed what tourists want out of a vacation. The information available lets many get acquainted with the other side of Spain. The country’s rich history spans millennia. It is why many visit to this day. The tours can get tough. After a long day of exploration, many travellers don’t have the energy to visit the beach.
Indeed, many tourists like to relax another way. After a long day of exploring Spain’s gorgeous cities, travellers want to crash on the bed in their hotel rooms or BnBs with some form of digital entertainment. Digital leisure is the new trend in entertainment. It isn’t just tourists or travellers that benefit from it. Spanish residents and expats to the country have also embraced the new way of life.
Digital leisure: What it means
The scope that many have of what digital leisure entails is quite narrow. The hobby refers to surfing the web or browsing social media for many. However, it goes much deeper than that. There is a broad range of different hobbies that one can enjoy on the internet. Online gaming is a growing trend. Though one may expect online gaming to be popular among younger generations, it is actually a massive success for people between the ages of 40-60. Puzzle games seem to be made with this demographic in mind.
An offshoot of online gaming is the iGaming industry. Online casinos have become a pretty popular trend among those who like to spin a reel now and then. The Wildz website features slots, as well as roulette and blackjack. A lot of the online casinos are also evolving with the times. Developers behind these sites are putting out original games that you won’t find anywhere else. These games combine the idea of gambling with the gameplay of classic retro games. The industry is thriving right now, with new gamblers joining daily.
Of course, it would be remiss not to bring up streaming services and video sharing platforms. Netflix is the biggest streaming service in Spain. However, next to it in popularity is movistar+. The Spanish platform features content in Spanish, along with locally-produced television shows and films. As with most people worldwide, Spain also has a bustling YouTube market. Spanish fans watch all of the big names that most will be familiar with. However, there are also some YouTubers from the country that have done well in their home market.
What makes digital leisure attractive
There are many other ways to have fun online. However, the truth of the matter is that most are already familiar with all of the different entertainment methods. What some may be confused about is the reason why digital leisure is such a popular trend among travellers to Spain. We said before that most people’s reason for visiting the country was once lounging on the beach with a cocktail or a glass of Spanish wine. However, more and more tourists are spending their days in their hotel rooms, tinkering with their phones.
Weather plays a big role. Spain tends to get hot during summer. Some visitors might have trouble dealing with the heat. It may not be an issue for Spanish locals, who’ve grown accustomed to it. But, travellers from Great Britain or Northern Europe will almost certainly have issue acclimating to this type of weather. For many, it is better to stay at their room and enjoy some fun digital pastimes.
The other reason that digital leisure is growing more popular among tourists is simply that the hobby is becoming more popular in general, and you can certainly understand the appeal. Digital entertainment is easy to access, as all one really needs is an electronic device and the internet. On top of that, much of what we can do on the world wide web is free. YouTube and Twitch are entirely free to watch and participate in. The same is true for most social media platforms. It shouldn’t be a surprise that free and widely available entertainment is such a hit among young and old generations.
Alternatives to digital leisure in Spain
There are some pretty great alternatives for those who want to experience Spain outside of the digital world. We’ve brought up the beaches many times in this article. But, that is only because the country is known world-wide for some of the most beautiful sandy beaches. The La Concha beach is particularly well-known. Not only does the gentle sand provide a soft place to set up camp, but the azure of the ocean contrasts the green of the nearby mountains quite well. It provides a gorgeous view that is simply impeccable.
Spanish cities have a lot to offer for younger people who are looking for a crazy nightlife. There are clubs and bars throughout the country that mix some of the finest cocktails you’ll ever find or serve craft beers unlike any you’ve ever tasted. DJs and bands visit Spain from all over the world. That means that music enthusiasts have a reason to come to the country and see some of their favourite acts. We aren’t just talking about the big pop stars either. Underground punk and heavy metal acts are also big in Spain. You might find your new favourite underrated artist on your next trip to the country.
Of course, Spain is also home to a slew of historical and cultural landmarks. The country also has natural beauty in spades. We already brought up the gorgeous beaches. But, there are also destinations for those who don’t like sand. The Timanfaya and Doñana National Parks are two of the most spectacular places you’ll ever visit.
