Rain and thunderstorms to kick off the month: Spain weather forecast Sept 2-5
Several parts of southern Spain are on high alert this week for driving rain and torrential storms
Weather alerts on Monday
After a long, hot summer with clear skies and plenty of sunshine, September is going to bring a change of pace to Spain and the first few days of the new month will be fairly unsettled across the country. Thanks to the presence of a DANA off the coast and a lingering Atlantic front, the temperatures will drop considerably in most regions, and several parts of Spain are in for more heavy rain and thunderstorms.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the coming week will be dominated by cloudy skies, frequent squalls and showers.
Monday September 2
Yellow and orange weather warnings will make an appearance on Monday, with the likes of Aragon and Castilla y Leon at significant risk from thunderstorms. Likewise, the Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community have been issued with a yellow warning for heavy rain.
As usual though, northern Spain will bear the brunt of the bad weather and it should be very pleasant in the rest of the country.
Daytime temperatures will a take nice dip along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, but the mercury will still tip 35ºC in many parts.
Tuesday September 3
The instability will continue in the northeast, where it will be very overcast and wet all day. The rain will likely extend to the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands during the afternoon. Eastern Spain will also be very cloudy and most mountainous areas can expect spits of rain at some point.
Today, the mercury will fall across the board, but the drop will be most noticeable in eastern and central Spain.
A yellow weather alert for thunderstorms and heavy rain has been issued until 5pm in the Valencian Community.
Wednesday September 4
Although its path could still change, at the moment Aemet believes a DANA will approach northern Spain on Wednesday, bringing along more cloudy skies and rain to the east of the country and the Balearic Islands.
Temperatures will tend to fall, except in the far west of Spain.
The yellow rain warning remains in place in the Valencian Community.
Thursday September 5
Although the DANA will continue to make its presence felt in the north of the country on Thursday, all of the weather alerts have been lifted. Overcast skies and widespread rain are forecast along the east coast and the Balearic Islands, while the rest of Spain will be mostly clear with cloudy intervals.
There’s still a high level of uncertainty, but it looks as though the temperatures will rise in the north-east and extreme south-west of the country, falling in the north-west, centre and south-east, as well as in the Balearic Islands. This could again lead to temperatures exceeding 35ºC in parts of the Guadalquivir.
Night-time temperatures will fall almost everywhere, with the first frosts likely to occur on the peaks of the Pyrenees.
