Popular Costa Blanca resort bans smoking on beaches
13 new Alicante beaches will fly the ‘Smoke Free Beach’ flag this summer

Just a short hop from Benidorm, the unofficial party capital of the Costa Blanca, Villajoyosa has officially joined the growing list of towns in the Alicante province to ban smoking on its beaches.
With this move, all 13 beaches and coves in the area have become part of the Valencian Community’s Smoke-Free Beaches network, a regional initiative aimed at fostering healthier, cleaner coastal spaces.
The decision, led by the Villajoyosa Council, reinforces the town’s commitment to public health and environmental protection, according to Councillor for Health Maite Sánchez, who explained that the municipality once again requested to join the programme through the Ministry of Health, hoping to create “healthy spaces for residents, protected from the harmful effects of tobacco smoke and its residue.”
As a result, the beaches of Bol Nou, Carritxal, Centro, Estudiantes, L'Esparrelló, La Caleta, Paradís, Puntes del Moro, Racó del Conill, Tio Roig, Torres, Varadero and Xarco will display the Smoke-Free Beach flag, whose emblem reminds visitors that smoking is no longer welcome on the sand.
Public information campaigns will also be launched to raise awareness about the impact of smoking, not only on health but on the environment as well.
Mr Sánchez stressed that the aim is to encourage respect for both personal wellbeing and the natural surroundings, ensuring everyone can enjoy a cleaner, more sustainable beach experience.
“Not only does tobacco harm the health of bathers, but cigarette butts also degrade the condition of the sand and water, in addition to creating a negative image of the surroundings,” he summed up.
