Orihuela Costa's water supply problem is finally being tackled with a €2.3 million investment
The new reservoir will double the current reserve capacity, giving Orihuela Costa residents far greater security of supply

Orihuela Costa is set to get a much-needed boost to its water supply after the city council published a tender for a new €2.3 million drinking water reservoir, a project that's been a long time coming for residents.
The area has had insufficient water reserve capacity for years, something the council's Infrastructure Councillor Víctor Valverde acknowledged openly.
"This is a problem we've been dealing with since 2010, and it hasn't been addressed until now," he said.
The new reservoir will be built alongside the existing one in the El Canal area and will have the same capacity as its neighbour at 6,000 cubic metres. Once complete, it will double the current reserve from five hours of supply to ten, meaning that if there's a breakdown or problem anywhere in the network, residents shouldn't be left without water while it's sorted out.
The project has a budget of just under €2.35 million including VAT and is expected to take eight months to complete once work begins. It also includes updated remote control, chlorination and security systems for the site.
Mayor Pepe Vegara was keen to point out that this is just the first step in a much more detailed plan to improve infrastructure along the coast, with a second phase already in development that includes new pipelines and additional intake points to support the area's growing population and planned urban development.
"We are working on a structural solution that will guarantee the water supply in Orihuela Costa for the long term," he said.
