Large parts of Spain remain on high alert all weekend for storms, torrential rain and treacherous sea conditions
Weather alerts for Thursday October 31
As several communities in southern Spain begin picking up the pieces following the tragic consequences of the DANA storm, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has warned of more widespread bad weather to come this Halloween long weekend.
More than 95 people are dead, an undetermined number are still missing and incalculable material damage has been caused by the storms which reached their zenith on Tuesday October 29.
In the Valencian Community, the most affected by the DANA, the authorities have confirmed 92 victims in several localities, while in Castilla-La Mancha two bodies have been found and there are at least five people missing. In Andalucía, the death of a 71-year-old British man has also been confirmed.
The storm is now situated over Castellón, Sevilla and Cádiz, as well as Catalonia, and while alerts are in effect up and down the country, the reality is that the weather maps can change in a matter of hours, so extreme caution has been advised across Spain.
One of the most frightening and dangerous characteristics of this DANA is its unpredictability. Huge quantities of rain can fall in a matter of minutes and, coupled with hurricane-force winds, this is a potential recipe for disaster.
The Spanish government has declared a three-day national mourning period so most Halloween events have now been cancelled out of respect for the victims and their loved ones. Over the weekend, Aemet is asking everyone to take extreme precautions and avoid travelling as far as possible.
Thursday October 31
Red alert for storms and/or heavy rain: the Valencian Community.
Orange alert for storms and/or heavy rain: Catalonia.
Yellow alert for storms and/or heavy rain: Andalucía, Aragon, Castilla y Leon, Extremadura, Ceuta.
Very heavy rain is expected throughout the day in much of the country, particularly the southwest, Castilla y Leon, southern Galicia, Aragon, Catalonia, the Levante area and the Balearic Islands. However, Aemet warns that these downpours could spread much further.
Despite the rain, daytime temperatures will continue to rise in most parts of southern Spain, reaching a pleasant 23 or 24ºC in Murcia and Alicante.
Friday November 1
Orange alert for storms and/or heavy rain: Balearic Islands.
Yellow alert for storms and/or heavy rain: Andalucía, Catalonia, Extremadura, the Valencian Community.
All of Spain will remain under the influence of a low pressure system on Friday, with heavy rain dominating the southwest including parts of Castilla y Leon, Aragon, Catalonia, the Levante and the Balearic Islands.
Some of the more persistent storms are forecast in the far west of Andalucía, south of Extremadura and the Balearic Islands.
Stormy intervals can’t be ruled out in other areas but it should remain dry for the most part in northern Galicia, Cantabria and the upper Ebro.
Saturday November 2
Orange alert for storms and/or heavy rain: Balearic Islands.
The weather will finally start to settle down on Saturday, although plenty of rain is still expected in southern Andalucía, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. There may also be showers and thunderstorms that are locally strong and/or persistent in the Valencian Community, southern Catalonia and the archipelagos.
Daytime temperatures will climb in western Spain and fall in the rest of the country.
Sunday November 3
All weather alerts have been lifted for Sunday.
The relatively stable weather will continue on Sunday and the worst of the rain should be confined to the Levante, Catalan coasts, the Strait of Gibraltar and the Balearic Islands.
Although the mercury will not experience major changes, slight increases in maximum temperatures will predominate.
