ARCHIVED - New underground car park announced in Aguilas as part of plans to revitalise the port area
The Town Council will put out to public tender a project for a 9,000m2 car park in the Robles Vives, Alfonso Escámez and Antonio Cortijos squares
A public tender is due to be put out very soon for the construction of a new underground car park just in front of the port in Águilas.
The Mayor of Águilas, Mari Carmen Moreno, and the Councillor for Public Works, María Dolores Simó, have announced that the Town Hall is ready to begin the tender to find a company to build the car park, which will be located beneath the Plaza Robles Vives, Plaza Alfonso Escámez and Plaza Antonio Cortijos, near the Tourist Information Office.
“We are aware of the need for a greater number of car parks in the central area,” they said, “so the Town Hall is going to hold a public tender for a 90-year administrative concession.”
The proposed car park will have a total area of more than 9,000 square metres, but it is down to each company that bids on the project to draw up plans for exactly how many parking spaces the car park will include.
That said, according to initial estimates in a sketch made by the Council itself, there will be around 308 standard car parking spaces, all of which will be accessible for people with reduced mobility and have an electric charging point. There will also be 20 spaces for motorbikes and reserved parking for bicycles could be built on an area measuring 9,088 square metres.
All of this comes within the project “Renaturalisation and creation of a single platform for traffic calming in Plaza de España and Calle Coronel Pareja”, a project for which a grant has been requested within the framework of the Programme of aid to municipalities for the implementation of low emission zones and the digital and sustainable transformation of urban transport and mobility, and financed using money from the European Union NextGeneration fund under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
“The funds from the European Union are all aimed at reducing road traffic, increasing space for pedestrians and cyclists, and this has to go hand in hand with providing a solution for parking,” explained the Mayor. “We have to move towards a municipality with greater mobility for pedestrians and cyclists.”
Revitalising the port area
As well as the car park underground, the proposed work will include the renovation and revitalisation of the three squares above ground, with the creation of a children’s play area and other facilities for use by the public.
Councillor Simó said, “At the end of the day the aim is to revitalise this area with the unification of the three squares and this large car park and with a modern port area… as well as creating a leisure area like those in other municipalities.”
She also urged the Regional Government to “present this project for the remodelling of the Port of Águilas”, because “in July the Mayor was informed that there was a Plan for the Remodelling of the Port of Águilas, but to date we are still waiting for this information from the Regional Government.”
