New Mercadona confirmed for Cabo de Palos – opening summer 2026!
A brand-new store is set to open, bringing more choice for shoppers and a boost for local businesses
Shoppers in Cabo de Palos can look forward to a brand-new Mercadona, as the supermarket chain has officially gotten the thumbs-up and secured all necessary permits to begin construction.Mercadona has received the final green light to open a new store in Las Dunas de Cabo de Palos, with work expected to begin at the end of March or early April. The development, covering 13,277 square metres, is part of an investment exceeding €5.2 million by the company led by Juan Roig.
If everything goes to plan, the build will take around 14 months to complete, with the supermarket expected to open its doors between May and June 2026 - just in time for the summer season.
The site will include a spacious ground floor of 4,168 square metres, a ground floor of 337 square metres, and an 8,700-square-metre basement. There will be parking for 235 vehicles, including eight spaces for customers with reduced mobility and another eight spaces with charging points for electric vehicles. Within the ground floor, there will be staff facilities with changing rooms, a rest area, and open-air terraces for machinery.
On top of that there will be additional outdoor parking of 3,660 square metres will provide 90 further spaces, with three more designated for those with reduced mobility.
Mercadona continues to dominate the supermarket world in the Region of Murcia, where it currently operates 62 stores, covering a total of 101,519 square metres. Its latest opening in Fuente Álamo in 2024 further cemented its position, giving the company a 24.2% share of the region’s supermarket retail space, according to Info Retail magazine.
The arrival of Mercadona is expected to breathe new life into the Las Dunas commercial area, which has struggled in recent years due to structural issues that forced parts of the complex to shut down. The new supermarket is likely to also attract further investment, with up to four large establishments of around 400 square metres planned nearby. Plus, there are hopes for 60 smaller units - ranging from banks and real estate agencies to cafés, shops, and tourist businesses - are expected to be part of the revitalised shopping area.
With work starting soon, the much-anticipated Mercadona store is set to become a key addition to the area and local community, offering both convenience and a welcome boost to local businesses.
