New energy label for mobiles and tablets aims to cut waste and help shoppers choose better
EU-wide scheme highlights energy efficiency, durability and repairability to encourage longer-lasting tech
A new energy label is now required on all mobile phones and tablets sold across Spain and the European Union. The label is designed to make it easier for consumers to choose devices that are not only efficient and durable, but also easier to repair.This initiative is part of a broader push to reduce electronic waste by promoting longer product lifespans and greater repairability, which are key goals of the EU’s circular economy strategy.
With this label, shoppers can compare how well different models perform in areas like battery life, energy use and resistance to damage. Here’s what the label includes and how it can help buyers make more informed choices.
What information does the label provide?
The label is clear and straightforward, giving consumers a quick overview of several key features:
- Brand and model: The label displays the product name, manufacturer, and a QR code that links to the device’s full technical file in the EU’s energy label database (EPREL)
- Energy efficiency: Rated from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient), this score reflects how much power the device uses, depending on its processor, screen and other hardware
- Battery life per charge: Indicates how long the device operates under standard usage before needing a recharge, based on fixed conditions like brightness, volume and connectivity
- Durability against drops: Only smartphones are tested here, not tablets. They’re scored from A to E based on how many falls the phone can withstand without damage. Top-rated devices can survive at least 45 drops without needing a case
- Ease of repair: This score reflects how straightforward it is to fix the device. It considers how easy it is to take apart, the availability of spare parts and whether repair instructions are provided. Ratings again range from A to E
- Battery longevity: Shows how many complete charge cycles the battery can go through before its capacity falls below 80%. The basic benchmark is 800 cycles
- Dust and water resistance: Based on the IP rating, this section tells you how well protected the device is from water splashes and dust particles. Smartphones must meet at least IP44, while tablets require a minimum of IP40
- Regulation code: A unique identifier confirms that the product is officially registered in the EU’s EPREL system
This labelling system makes it easier to judge whether a phone or tablet will stand the test of time and whether it’s a better long-term investment. By helping people choose smarter, the scheme also supports more sustainable consumption and less waste going to landfill.
