ARCHIVED - New council gardening contractor arrives on Camposol
After legal challenges and delays the new municipal gardening contractor’s work teams arrive on Camposol
The Mazarrón municipal parks and gardens maintenance and cleaning contract was originally put out to tender on December 7 2021 with a deadline for tenders to be submitted by February 23 2022 and work expected to start by the winning contractor 2 or 3 months after that. Unfortunately, a string of objections and challenges through the courts by Mazarrón Council opposition parties and other contractors, which were eventually judged to be unfounded by the courts, meant the process was delayed by around 12 months.
The contract for the cleaning and maintenance of public parks and gardens throughout the municipality was awarded to the company STV Gestion. The contract is valued at nearly 6 million euros (including tax), which includes many of the public cultivated areas on the Camposol urbanisation. A list and plan of the areas in Camposol included in the contract can be seen in an article on this link. Representatives of the Camposol volunteer gardening groups met with the Head of Services of STV Gestion SL at the end of April.
At the meeting discussions took place regarding issues including palm pruning programmes, weed control, insect and processionary caterpillar control and it was agreed that the gardening groups would liase with the Councillor for Camposol and the services technician to ensure that the various works would be coordinated and any incidents, like processionary caterpillar infestations could be reported to STV for prompt treatment.
STV Gestion SL are a large regional company, having contracts with the regional governments of Murcia and Alicante and local councils including Torre Pacheco, Águilas and Fuente Alamo, they also have contracts with individual urbanisations including Mar Menor Golf Resort, La Torre, El Valle and Condado de Alhama.
The STV Head of Services has said that initially he expects to have 3 teams working on Camposol and, when the workload is assessed, to put in place a service rota plan. He has also confirmed that waste vegetation will not be disposed in the Council’s garden waste skips but will be taken away by STV vehicles for disposal in one of their own facilities.
Work teams arrived on Tuesday morning (May 2) and as previously requested by the president of the Sector D gardening group, work started on the specified areas on Sector D: the reason for the request was based on an observation that various types of work previously carried out on the urbanisation usually started on sectors A or B with Sector D left until last.
