Málaga Cathedral's roof renovation pushed back to mid-2027
Fire safety redesign and stone facade addition extend the €22.5m project timeline
If you've been keeping an eye on the impressive work on Málaga Cathedral's roof, there's a going to be a delay: completion is now set for mid-2027 rather than September 2026. Cathedral dean Juan Manuel Ferrary shared the news, explaining that fire department concerns prompted a redesign of the wooden structure, plus the addition of a stone facade to finish the main front perfectly. The good part? Progress is steady - the wooden framework is already more than halfway done, and none of this disrupts the daily religious services or tourist visits inside. Roof access stays closed for safety, but everything else carries on as normal. Ferrary noted the new bishop, José Antonio Satué, has been fully briefed and even toured the site with the project technicians.
This €22.5 million effort is funded by a team of supporters: the Junta de Andalucía Andalusian Regional Government, Ayuntamiento de Málaga, Provincial Council, Unicaja Foundation and Cabildo Catedralicio de Málaga (Cathedral Chapter), with hopes for more private contributions down the line. The stone facade will bring ten new sculptures and a balustrade, giving the cathedral that polished, complete look visitors love.
For those who pop into Málaga Cathedral regularly, it's reassuring to know the work is moving forward thoughtfully, even if it takes a bit longer. Safety first, especially after those fire risk warnings, and the end result should be worth the wait - a beautifully restored roof blending modern standards with historic charm. Keep an eye on it next time you're in town and see how everything is coming along.
