Murcia tourism jobs hit record high ahead of sizzling summer season
More than 68,000 people now work in the sector as the region gears up for a busy summer

According to the latest data from the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, a total of 68,619 people were employed in tourism-related roles across Murcia at the end of May. That’s nearly 2,000 more than the same time last year, a 3% increase, and the highest ever figure recorded for the month.
So far in 2025, the region has averaged 47,828 workers in hospitality and travel agencies, showing a healthy year-on-year growth of 2.7%. That’s not only higher than last year’s figures, but also ahead of the national average, which currently stands at 2.4%.
Tourism now makes up around 10% of the region’s total workforce, a significant slice of the local economy. On the final day of May, the number of registered workers in hospitality and travel services officially topped 50,000 for the first time ever, reaching 50,493. That even surpasses the peak figures seen in the height of last summer, with a 3.1% increase compared to July and August 2024.
Of these workers, 81.2% are salaried employees, totalling 41,014 people. This is up 3.1% from May last year. The remaining 18.8% are self-employed, numbering 9,479, a 2.5% increase compared to May 2024.
In fact, Murcia now boasts the second highest growth rate in tourism self-employment across the country, beaten only by La Rioja. The national rise was just 0.7%, placing Murcia well above the average.
With more travellers expected to head to the Costa Cálida this summer, the Region of Murcia is heading into summer 2025 with its strongest tourism workforce on record.
