Monday October 13 is a bank holiday, but only in these 5 regions of Spain
A lucky few will enjoy a long weekend but for the rest of us, it’s business as usual

Día de la Hispanidad, one of the most important dates on the holiday calendar in Spain, is celebrated on October 12 every year. It's also known as Spain's National Day (Fiesta Nacional de España) and commemorates Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas in 1492.
In 2025, October 12, Spain's National Holiday, falls on a Sunday, something that hasn't happened for 11 years. This quirk of the calendar has created a split across Spain's autonomous communities, with only five deciding to shift the holiday from October 12 to Monday the 13th, whilst in the rest it will be a normal working day.
In total, workers in Spain are entitled to 14 paid holidays per year: eight fixed national holidays which cannot be changed (such as January 1, May 1 and December 25), four regional holidays and two local holidays.
In this case, the fact that October 12 falls on a Sunday leaves the decision to move the holiday to Monday to each regional government.
This year, the only autonomous communities that have decided to move the holiday from October 12 to Monday the 13th are:
- Andalucia
- Aragon
- Asturias
- Castilla y León
- Extremadura
The autonomous city of Melilla has also opted to move its non-working day to Monday. In these regions, workers will be able to enjoy a long weekend (Saturday the 11th, Sunday the 12th and Monday the 13th), which they can take advantage of for a getaway.
