The figure of Christ tied to the whipping post is accompanied back to its mountain sancutary

May 9 to 11 Romería del Cristo Amarrado in Jumilla Every year on the second Sunday in May the Romería del Cristo Amarrado takes place in Jumilla, as the sculpted figure of Christ tied to the whipping post travels from the historic centre of the town up into the nearby Sierra of Santa Ana del Monte, and in 2025 the programme of events has been extended to take in the whole weekend.

The figure of el Cristo Amarrado a la Columna is kept in the Convento de la Sierra de Santa Ana del Monte, 6 kilometres from the centre of Jumilla, for 11 months of the year, and is the most revered item in Jumilla's religious art heritage. It was created by the master sculptor Francisco Salzillo in 1756, when it was acquired by the monastery, and since 1848 has been brought down from Santa Ana on the evening of Palm Sunday, returning triumphantly in a Romeria on the second Sunday in May after a floral offering is made to the statue the Sunday before.

Program 2025

Friday May 9

18.00: The opening of the exhibition “Verso a Verso” at the Convento de Santa Ana, organized by the Hermandad del Cristo Amarado a la Columna.

Saturday May 10

17.30: Live music from the “rociera” choir SHA SHA VAMONOS.

19.00: Live music from Aire Flamenco.

21.30: Live flamenco music, followed by background music until 2.00.

All events take place around the Convento de Santa Ana la Vieja.

Sunday May 11

May 9 to 11 Romería del Cristo Amarrado in Jumilla 7.30: Mass is held in the parish church of Santiago before the figure of Christ moves off towards the church of San Agustin.

Hot chocolate and Fritillas Jumillanas are offered to participants at a local bar. All horses and carriages, horsemen and participants then head off at around 8.15 to the church of San Agustin, where they arrive at 9.00 to meet up with the statue and depart to the Monte de Santa Ana.

At the foot of the mountain, the participants meet up at the Paraje "El Prao" with an arch of flowers waiting there to accompany them on the final stretch. They then walk the final part up to the monastery through the forests which surround it, and on arrival Mass is held at around 10.00.

May 9 to 11 Romería del Cristo Amarrado in Jumilla Most participants then go off for a walk or head to the Zona Recreativa, Santa Ana La Vieja where a Jumillan breakfast awaits them at approximately 11.30.

From 12:30 music is provided by Al Compás and then from 13.30 lunch is served. This is eaten at temporary "barracas" (open air bars) in the recreational zone, serving tapas, food and drinks as well as a collection of artisan stands and fair attractions, and selling all manner of products throughout the day.

In addition a camping ground is to be set up, along with children's attractions and specially designated picnic zones. Parking is also provided for those who have chosen not to make the journey on foot. .

Taking part in the Romería

May 9 to 11 Romería del Cristo Amarrado in Jumilla Those who wish to participate in the Romeria can do so in one of 2 stages. From the church of San Agustín participants can walk the 4 kilometres to the Paraje El Prao or take a bus. From El Prao it's another 2 kilometres on foot. Buses then ferry participants back into town until around 17.00.

Alternatively, drive to the recreational area and just walk the last stretch with the figure of Christ.

The tourist office in the centre of Jumilla is easily found by driving straight into the centre of the town along the Avenida de Murcia and following the signposts. The tourist office is alongside the Parque de Don Albano Martínez Molina, where there are a number of parking spaces.

Jumilla, in the north of the Region of Murcia, has become internationally famous over recent decades due to the quality of the wines produced in the municipality, and wine tourism has begun to attract visitors from other parts of Spain and the rest of Europe.

The tourist office is happy to provide a range of maps and leaflets showing the different bodegas which can be visited within the municipality. Some of these form part of the Rutas del Vino de Jumilla, the Jumilla wine route, and can either be visited as a guided tour or sell their produce directly to the public.(see feed below for more details)

However, the town and the surrounding countryside have plenty of other attractions for visitors, and the popularity of Jumilla wines is leading more and more people to discover other facets of the tenth largest municipality in Spain.

These include the spectacular countryside and birdlife in the Sierra del Carche, the historic remains which range from cave paintings and a Roman mausoleum to the castle, the Iglesia de Santiago, the Town Hall and the Teatro Vico, and the gastronomy: rich stews are accompanied not only by the wines of the area but also by Jumilla pears, which also enjoy Denomination of Origin status.

Tourism in Jumilla is not as seasonal as it is in the coastal areas of the Region of Murcia, but the town is at its liveliest during the fiestas in Holy Week and the August Fair, which incorporates the grape harvest celebrations and the Moors and Christians parades.

The Altiplano of the Region of Murcia, which consists of the municipalities of Jumilla and Yecla, is only just over an hour by car from the Mar Menor, Cartagena, Mazarrón, Torrevieja and Alicante, and anyone wishing to visit real inland Spain and world-class wineries is advised to include Jumilla in their schedule.
