Los Alcázares named the happiest place to live in the Region of Murcia
A new happiness index puts the town at the top, with sunshine, services and quality of life all playing a part
If you are looking for a place to feel good about where you call home, the latest data points firmly to the Region of Murcia. The Spain Happy Index 2026, compiled by real estate and wellbeing firm Sonneil Homes, places Los Alcázares at the top of the rankings for the region, with a score of 89.77 out of 100.
The town earns top marks thanks in large part to its climate. Los Alcázares enjoys 332 sunny days a year and only 27 rainy days, alongside an average temperature of about 20°C, making it an attractive spot for those who value warmth and light. In second place is Mazarrón with 82.98 points, followed by Torre Pacheco on 81.67, both of which also benefit from more than 290 days of sunshine and relatively light rainfall.
Other coastal towns feature strongly, including Águilas, which scores 80.06 with 312 sunny days and 23 rainy ones. Inland municipalities also shine: Lorca reaches 79.93 points, benefiting from 299 days of sunshine and just 16 rainy days, alongside its size and role as a local hub.
The study looks at more than 8,000 Spanish municipalities, building a score from 0 to 100 based on factors such as sunny and rainy days, average temperature, access to services, and territorial traits like whether a town is coastal or inland. Within the Region of Murcia, the climate clearly plays a decisive role, but so does access to hospitals, schools, transport links and daily amenities.
Among the higher scoring towns are Fuente Álamo de Murcia, Beniel and Librilla, all hovering around the late 70s and early 80s, with sunshine totals between 289 and 300 days per year. The list also includes Alcantarilla and Las Torres de Cotillas, each on 77.75 points, along with Alhama de Murcia and Santomera, all with more than 300 days of sunshine annually.
Even the city of Murcia appears in the rankings with 77.18 points, thanks to its wide range of services, education and infrastructure, despite a less extreme climate of 222 sunny days and 32 rainy ones.
Andrés Pedrera, CEO of Sonneil Homes, says weather is not the only factor, but it matters. “The well being of a region doesn’t depend solely on the climate, but in regions like Murcia, it’s clear that weather conditions play an important role, along with access to services and the quality of the environment,” he explains. “The Region of Murcia combines sunshine, services and a very attractive quality of life, which translates into very high levels of happiness in many of its municipalities.”
