La Lonja Cultural Centre Orihuela
Multi purpose cultural centre, auditorium and music school, Orihuela city
La Lonja is a multi-use cultural centre set in the heart of Orihuela city and was first built as a covered marketplace (an auction house to be exact) in 1926, designed by Orihuela architect, Severiano Sánchez Ballesta.
The original building forms a large rectangular base, built in three aisles, supported by iron beams and columns. The principal fachade sports a tiled design of the Orihuela coat of arms, ( escudo) flanked by cornucopia, horns of plenty.
The building fell into disuse following the construction of a more modern lonja in the Polígono Industrial Puente Alto, and was reformed by the council for use as a cultural centre, auditorium and music school.
In 2008 it was inaugurated as the "Conservatorio Pedro Terol".
