June 14 Turtle awareness morning in Cabo de Palos!
Learn how to protect loggerhead turtles at the Playa de Levante in Cabo de Palos
Over the last few years, after a hiatus of around a century, female loggerheads have begun laying their eggs on a few of the unspoilt beaches of the Costa Cálida, and as a result great efforts are being made to ensure that as many as possible of the young animals survive hatching and eventually make their way into the Mediterranean (often after a period in veterinary care).
If this project is to be a success, one of the key elements is to ensure that members of the public are well-informed about the situation and behave appropriately if there is a sighting of a nest. With this in mind, as series of morning sessions is being held at popular beaches during the month of June (coinciding with World Sea Turtle Day!), showing what turtle tracks looks like in the sand and how to react if you spot them.
The first of these activities takes place on Sunday 14th June at the Playa de Levante in Cabo de Palos between 10.00 and 13.00, and all members of the public are invited to pop in and learn a little about how to act responsibly in order to protect the future of the turtles in the Mediterranean Sea.
