Inflation pushes up Murcia food prices as eggs rise by 60%
Eggs have risen by 60.5% since 2022, while lamb, beef, coffee and cocoa have also seen substantial price increases across the Region

Anyone doing the weekly food shop in the Region of Murcia will probably have noticed that some everyday items are costing quite a bit more than they used to.
Figures from the Centre for Regional Statistics (CREM), based on the Consumer Price Index (IPC), show just how much some food prices have changed since July 2022.
Eggs have seen the biggest rise, increasing by 60.5% over the four years. They are followed by lamb, which has gone up by 36.6%, while beef is now 32% more expensive. Coffee, cocoa and infusions have risen by 29.4%, with potatoes and potato products up 24.8%.
Prepared pulses and vegetables have also become more expensive, with prices rising by 22.7% since July 2022.
The increases are part of a rise in the cost of living. Prices across the Region were around 11.4% higher in July 2026 than they were four years earlier.
Food prices have been affected by a combination of factors during that time. The disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic was followed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, while extreme weather has also affected food production.
Poor weather can reduce harvests and leave less produce available, which can push prices higher when demand remains steady.
The impact can then spread beyond the supermarket, as higher food and energy costs feed into areas such as restaurants, rents and other services.
For households, the result has been a change in shopping habits. Consumur says lower-income families have been particularly affected, with people cutting back on products including meat, fish, fruit, eggs, vegetables and milk.
Prepared meals, frozen food and fast food have become more popular, particularly among younger people. Shoppers are also becoming more selective, with seasonal produce and supermarket shopping gaining ground.
The weekly food bill can now take up a sizeable chunk of a household budget. Consumur estimates that one person spends between €100 and €150 a week on food, while a middle-income family of three or four can spend between €320 and €400.
For those trying to keep costs down, choosing supermarket own-brand products can make a difference. Consumur estimates that switching to own brands can save between 35% and 45%.
Inflation has eased from the highs seen in recent years, but prices are still rising. Murcia recorded an annual inflation rate of 3.7% in July 2026, slightly above Spain's 3.6%.
For shoppers, the weekly food bill is still putting pressure on household budgets, even though prices are no longer rising as quickly as they were a few years ago.
