Data have revealed that a notable shift is occurring in Spain’s energy market, with a significant rise in the number of households switching their energy suppliers.According to the report Household Panel by the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC), 14.4% of households switched their natural gas supplier in 2023, compared to just 7.2% in 2021 – exactly double.
As the report points out, these data point to a clear trend toward greater flexibility and responsiveness on the part of consumers to market conditions. Similarly, 13.9% of households made a switch for electricity, a 25% increase compared to previous years.
A key factor in these changes, they found, is the desire for lower energy bills. In fact, around 80% of customers who switched both electricity and natural gas suppliers cited cost savings as their primary motivation.
This trend reflects the growing sensitivity to energy costs in Spain, which is further amplified by the country’s inflationary pressures and the volatile global energy market.

Despite the rising trend of switching, the process is not always straightforward. The CNMC Household Panel indicates that 12.1% of natural gas customers and 6.8% of electricity customers found the switching process difficult.
