High-speed train service between Murcia and Madrid announced for the summer
Journeys from the Region of Murcia to the Spanish capital will take less than three hours
Low-cost rail operator Ouigo has just announced that travellers will be able to purchase tickets for high-speed trips between Murcia and Madrid from May 22. Although no official start date has been given for the trains to start running, the company has confirmed that passengers will be able to travel from the Region to Spain’s capital throughout the coming summer.
Ouigo had planned to start operating the route in June, but ongoing works at Madrid’s Chamartín station have delayed these plans somewhat. Despite the infrastructure work affecting Ouigo and its primary rival, Renfe, the French-owned private company remains optimistic in offering top-notch services while ensuring passengers enjoy the utmost convenience and comfort.
Once it’s up and running, Ouigo plans to provide two daily roundtrips featuring state of the art double-decker trains accommodating approximately 14,000 travellers per week. Fares will start from just 9 euros, generally ranging between 19 euros and 25 euros based on various amenities offered during the journey.
Ouigo’s ‘low fare’ fare system works as long as its trains have an average occupancy rate of 90%. With popular connections like Madrid-Barcelona averaging around 95%, expectations remain high for similar success on the soon-to-be-launched Murcia-Madrid line.
The Murcia trains will stop briefly in Elche and Albacete to accommodate the high demand at these stations but unlike some competing services, Ouigo trains won’t stopover in Alicante, thereby reducing the overall travel time to a swift 2 hours and 45 minutes.
At the moment, Ouigo only has permission to run this route until December 31 but the operator hopes to sign a three-year deal in the near future.
