Freezing temperatures put 31 Spanish provinces on alert this Wednesday
The thermometers will plummet below -10ºC in several parts of Spain in the next few hours
Extreme caution will be needed for anyone heading out on foot or by car on Wednesday January 15 as no fewer than 31 provinces across Spain have been placed on alert for freezing temperatures overnight, which is unlikely to thaw until mid-morning at the earliest.
The thermometers are tipped to drop as low as -8 or -10ºC in parts of the extreme north, central Spain and the south, according to predictions by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
Orange alerts, which represent a significant risk, have been issued in Segovia and Soria, both in Castilla y León.
The remaining yellow level low temperature warnings will be active in:
- Andalucía: Córdoba and Granada
- Aragon: Huesca, Teruel and Zaragoza
- Balearic Islands: Mallorca
- Castilla y León: Avila, Burgos, Leon, Palencia, Salamanca, Valladolid and Zamora
- Castilla-La Mancha: Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara and Toledo
- Catalonia: Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona
- Extremadura: Badajoz and Caceres.
Temperatures expected at noon this Wednesday
Warnings for potentially sub-zero temperatures have also been issued in the Sierra de Madrid, Metropolitana, Henares and Sur, Vegas and Oeste. Cold warnings will also be active in the Altiplano and the Northwest of Murcia, the Navarrese Pyrenees, Alicante and Valencia. At the same time, Girona in Catalonia will also have a warning for dangerous sea conditions because of the strong winds forecast.
Despite this frigid cold, Aemet is expecting a dry, bright day in most of Spain this Wednesday.
As the hours go by, day-time temperatures should actually start to climb in most of Spain and the Balearic Islands compared to the previous couple of days, although most places are unlikely to see the mercury rise much above 16ºC or 17ºC.
Because of the low overnight temperatures, frost will continue to affect most of inland Spain and parts of Mallorca. It will be intense in areas of the northeast and in parts of Andalucía.
The provincial capital with the lowest minimum temperatures forecast will be Teruel with -7ºC; followed by Ávila, Burgos, Palencia and Salamanca with -6ºC.
