Switch to pay as you go, for hot water with a gas water heater powered by butane
For those of us that are not able to have a full oil or gas central heating and hot water system, one way to make instant savings on your energy bills could be by switching to a gas water heater instead of an electric one. Some villas on Camposol were only released with a small 50 litre electric water heater, usually found in a corner cupboard in the kitchen. You will be lucky to get two showers out of it or one very shallow bath.
Larger electric water heaters, which hold between 80 and 150 litres of water, are available but cost even more to use, and even longer to heat up.
The cost of a full gas bottle is approximately 20 euros and should last an average household for around six weeks. There is also the advantage of “unlimited and instantaneous” hot water as the hot water is not stored. The gas water heater will kick in when you open the hot tap. The days of pilot lights are ancient history now. The units are sealed, and do now need an electrical socket to function which can be provided too as part of the installation.
An average new installation of a modern gas water heater can be completed in less than half a day, and based on the cost saving on your current electric monthly bill, the “payback” on your investment should be well under 6 months.
Now may also be the time to consider replacing your electric hobs and ovens with gas appliances to make even more savings.
