Elderly British tourist drowns during Spanish holiday
The 70-year-old was on vacation with his wife in Menorca

Sad news has emerged from the Balearic Islands as a British pensioner lost his life while swimming at the Son Bou Beach in Menorca. According to local reports, other brave beachgoers rushed into the surf when they saw the 70-year-old tourist struggling in the waves, but they were unable to save him.
Eyewitnesses reported that several people sunbathing along the shoreline alerted the coastguard as the elderly man struggled to stay afloat. First responders pulled him to shore and worked for thirty minutes to administer CPR but sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The married couple had travelled to Menorca to celebrate the septuagenarian’s recent birthday and were staying in a house nearby. The victim’s wife, who was sitting on the beach when her husband went for a swim, was attended to by healthcare professionals after the tragedy.
Of course, this isn’t the first heartbreaking occurrence of its kind on Spanish island beaches. Last year, a 62-year-old British traveller suffered a similar fate in Mallorca, dying on the sand in front of his horrified partner.
At the end of March, as storm Nelson ravaged Spain, a British holidaymaker was swept out to sea by 7-metre-high waves near the mouth of the Nalón River in Asturias. On the very same day, a 32-year-old German man plunged into the sea in Tarragona when he noticed a teenager in trouble. Both bodies were recovered from the water a short time later.
And just this week, a 53-year-old Czech tourist died in Puerto de la Cruz on Spain’s Tenerife, after falling into the sea while taking photos of the crashing waves in an area of natural pools.
