Earthquake ripples waters off Huelva's coast
Sunday morning tremor is felt south of Cape St Vincent, but causes no damage
Early yesterday morning, Sunday October 5, a 4.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Huelva, south of Cape St Vincent, at a depth of 30 kilometres. The National Geographic Institute (IGN) reported the event at 8.38am, giving the epicentre’s exact coordinates as 35.9910 latitude and -10.2845 longitude. This was the second tremor in the area in little more than a week, continuing a pattern of undersea seismic activity in the region. No damage or injuries have been reported and, in fact, most people in Huelva didn’t feel much at all. A 4.3 magnitude earthquake is often described as minor or light. For perspective, such tremors usually result in a short, gentle shaking indoors, possibly rattling glassware or windows but rarely causing structural problems. Most people outdoors may not notice it, as the impact typically falls below the threshold for concern and emergency hotlines usually receive few, if any, calls.
The IGN has also reminded residents of its advice for earthquake preparation. Essential items include a first aid kit, bottled and non-perishable water, a whistle, dynamo flashlights, a battery-powered radio, and a fire extinguisher. Staying calm is key, moving away from danger if possible, and taking shelter if indoors.
The area south of Cape St Vincent, sitting at the border between Eurasian and African tectonic plates, experiences seismic activity from time to time, but events like this are generally weak and pass quickly. Experts will keep monitoring the situation, but for now, life along the Huelva coast continues undisturbed with little more than a reminder of nature’s occasional tremble.
