Corvera Airport invests in safety and flood defences
The Region of Murcia International Airport will spend more than 500,000 euros to address safety concerns and extreme weather risks
The Region of Murcia International Airport in Corvera is set to undergo significant improvements as Aena, Spain’s airport operator, has initiated a project to enhance the airport’s infrastructure and address safety concerns.
With a substantial budget of 510,000 euros and an estimated duration of 8 months, these upgrades aim to bolster the airport's resilience and functionality.
Intense torrential rains in recent years have taken a toll on the airport’s slopes and drainage channels, causing considerable damage and even compromising safety at times. As a result, one of the first tasks undertaken by the winning company will be to tackle these vital repairs and adaptations.
The project encompasses several key actions, including the repair of gaps in fencing to maintain airport security, the adaptation of the external slope in the critical area of the ILS (GP) and adjustments to the exit mouth of the central frame. All of these interventions are designed to improve the airport’s resilience against extreme weather and ensure the safety of aircraft, passengers and staff.
Aena has already put the project out to tender and companies have until July 8 to submit their bids.
The extensive repairs will hopefully return some of the shine to the Region of Murcia International Airport, whose passenger numbers were down by 1.8% in May compared to the same month last year.
But in another move to draw more visitors, Corvera recently launched a new connection with Bilbao through the airline Volotea. This new route has two weekly frequencies and starts with flights on Wednesdays and Sundays, although this will be increased to include Tuesdays and Saturdays during the high season.
Altogether this summer, the Region of Murcia International Airport has 22 regular destinations, 15 international and 7 domestic.
