Cartagena beach closed again for poor water quality
The Council has ordered the closure of Cala Reona beach due to pollution
Cartagena City Council has decreed that swimming be prohibited on Cala Reona beach until optimum water quality levels are restored, which deteriorated as a result of last Wednesday’s rain. The storm, which discharged quantities of more than 50 litres per square metre in the area from which the Cala Reona treatment plant collects water, prevented the facility from completing the purification processes correctly. This is not the first time Cala Reona has been closed to swimmers due to the poor quality of the water. In June 2023 and in May 2022, damage to the outflow pipe there meant that faecal matter and other waste contaminated the water for several days, and it seems to be an ongoing problem at this Cartagena beach. Both the City Council of Cartagena and the health authorities of the Region of Murcia are monitoring the evolution of the water quality in the coming hours until it can be reopened to bathing with all the guarantees.Meanwhile, another beach in the municipality of Cartagena, the Playa de Calblanque, has reached the shortlist for the Best Beach in Spain 2024 awards by Condé Nast magazine.Image: Ayuntamiento de Cartagena
