Mazarrón Council hold awareness day in Puerto de Mazarrón for the environmental benefits of recycling cooking oils
The Mazarrón Council Department of the Environment organised an awareness day on the paseo in Puerto de Mazarrón stressing the environmental benefits of recycling cooking oils and also distributing funnels which can be used to pour the used cooking oil into the containers more easily. Mazarrón Mayor, Gaspar Miras and Councillors Plácida Gómez and Raquel Raja attended the distribution of funnels.
Mazarrón Council has recently signed a contract with company Gerefran to deal with used cooking oil in an environmentally beneficial way, raising the number of municipal recycling containers from 8 to 42 situated at various points in the municipal area between Mazarrón, Puerto de Mazarrón, Camposol, Country Club and district. Camposol has 2 cooking oil recycling points with receptacles localed on Avenida Saladillo in Sector A and the carpark on Avenida de los Covachos near Sector B Commercial Centre (pictured).
The management of used vegetable oil residues is of great importance in environmental issues, mainly because of water pollution and the problems and costs derived from its treatment being avoided, in turn reducing the carbon footprint. These problems and costs among others are: blocked pipes, water purification, aquifer (ground water) and sea water contamination.
With the awareness campaign promoted by Mazarrón Council’s Department of the Environment the aim is to create social awareness about the importance of recycling used oil to provide a better world. The Mayor of Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras, commented that "With these actions we intend to raise awareness about sustainability and the importance of the practice of these actions by all citizens."
The Councillor for the Environment, Plácida Gómez stated, "it is important that the oil we use does not reach our seas, with these funnels to adapt to plastic bottles it will be easier to pour the oil and to deposit it in the containers that we have installed throughout the municipality”.
