Camposol Gardening groups address Mazarron Council meeting on Healthy Ageing
Mazarrón Council invite Camposol groups to speak about setting up and running gardening groups
The project "Healthy Ageing" has arrived in Mazarrón, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, FEMP (Federation of Spanish Municipalities and Provinces) and RECS (Spanish Network of Healthy Towns/Cities),aimed at people over the age of 65 and promoting the improvement of mental and physical health through gardening.
At the invitation of Mazarrón Councillor for Health and Camposol, Carmen Navarro, gardening groups from the Camposol urbanisation spoke at the Mazarrón Day Centre for the elderly to explain how to set up and manage a gardening group, this being a novel enterprise in Mazarrón and Spain, where such groups are rare.
From Camposol the Greenfingers gardening group was represented by Paul Cassidy and Cielo Duque and the Camposol D Community and Gardening group were represented by Pat Ridler and Alan Femming. The Camposol Business Association, who acted as coordinators, were also present, as were a Spanish television broadcaster and radio stations.
The Councillor for Health and Camposol, spoke about the benefits of gardening for health and general wellbeing by keeping the body active and concentrating the mind while spending more time in the open air and building a community spirit when carried out as part of a group or association.
Cielo Duque acted as spokesperson for the gardening groups and explained how and why the gardening groups on Camposol were set up (where are currently 4 registered groups) and how the work not only benefited the urbanisation aesthetically but also kept the members active and promoted a sense of community.
Also in attendance at the meeting were Silvia Garcia, Mazarrón Councillor for the elderly and Juan Carlos Lopez, Councillor for Citizen Participation.
Members of the Day Centre were invited to sign up for the "Healthy Ageing" incentive starting October 17.
