Biblioteca Municipal Padre Salmerón
Padre Salmerón Cieza Library
The library is named alter Franciscan monk, Pascual Salmerón Fernández, who was born in Cieza on 1st January 1719 and died at the age of 88, in San Joaquín´s Convent which is the location of the current library. He wrote various books, the most notable being “ La antigua Carteya, Carcesa, hoy Cieza, villa del Reino de Murcia..., “ published in 1777.
The XVII century building, which is the ex-convent of San Joaquin and San Pascual, was declared a building of cultural interest in 2000. The first stone was laid in 1685, the construction taking fourteen years before the building was officially inaugurated on 6th November 1699. In 1988, there was a legal battle between the town hall and the church over the ownership of the property which was resolved by an official agreement to share the property between both institutions.
The town hall kept the eastern and southern sections, as well as the cloister. In 2008 the decision was taken to convert it into a library and the municipal part was refurbished. The work was carried out by the architect, Martín Lejárraga, becoming a prize winner in the XV Premios de Arquitectura de la Región de Murcia.
