August 23 to September 8 Annual fiestas in Calasparra
Bull runs and bullfighting along with live music during these most traditional fiestas in the north-west of Murcia
Every late August and early September the town of Calasparra in north-west Murcia holds its annual fiestas, featuring six bull runs through the streets along the lines of the famous events in Pamplona, six afternoons of bullfights, plenty of live music and a folk music and dancing festival.
The climax of the fiestas is the feast day of Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza, in whose honour the extraordinary Sanctuary just outside the town was built, and on the eve of that date a Romería is held at the Sanctuary before the religious celebrations on 8th September.
Throughout the fiestas period there is a fairground and a fiestas marquee, where the atmosphere is always lively, and although the traditional livestock fair is no longer held this is still a time of year steeped in the traditions of this rural part of Spain.
Of course, many non-Spaniards (and Spaniards??) are offended by events relating to bullfighting, but these are immensely popular fiestas and thousands participate every year – with the inevitable mishaps along the way.
The main features of the fiestas programme in 2025 include the following:
