ARCHIVED - More bins go up in smoke on Camposol Urbanisation
Was it thoughtlessness or criminality that reduced 3 more Camposol refuse bins to ash and melted plastic?
The cause is unknown but another 3 refuse bins have gone up in smoke on the Camposol development, continuing a trend which has seen numerous containers destroyed by fire in a matter of months.
In November, after 2 bins were destroyed, Mazarrón Council asked for a little forethought when disposing of ash residue from log fires as it seemed they had been destroyed by ash dumped into them which was still hot enough to ignite the contents of the container, causing a fire hot enough to melt the container itself.
However, the cause of the latest incident is uncertain and while it could be sheer thoughtlessness it could be deliberate as has occurred recently in Cartagena. Accidental rubbish bin fires do happen from time to time, but are still avoidable with a little care and consideration and it should be remembered that ash and embers from a log burner can, in certain circumstances, remain hot for up to 72 hours (3 days) as the ash acts as an insulator for the embers.
The manager of Bahía de Mazarrón Ingeniería Urbana, the concern in charge of Mazarrón refuse collection, commented after a previous incident that “the destruction of the bins is wholly avoidable just by checking that ashes have cooled down, and not only is it an inconvenience replacing the bins, they also cost Mazarrón Council 350 euros each”.
Mazarrón Councillor for Camposol, Silvana Buxton has contacted Bahía de Mazarrón Ingeniería Urbana to apologise and ask if replacements can be provided. This was agreed and replacements will be delivered as soon as possible.
The latest incident is a shame considering the efforts by gardening groups and the Camposol 2025 group to smarten up refuse and recycling areas.
