ARCHIVED - Mazarron Council to petition higher authorities to finance work on the Camposol’s Los Aznares rambla
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Proposal for the state, regional and local governmentsto coordinate and finance the channelling of the Rambla which runs through Sector D of the urbanisation
The Town Council of Mazarrón will ask the National Government who, through the CHS (water infrastructures authority), control riverbeds and surrounding land, and the regional government of Murcia to reach an agreement for the financing of the necessary actions to channel the Rambla de los Aznares in the municipality of Mazarrón.
The proposal by the PP party was approved at the Council Pleno meeting in May, however this was a recommendation of the Murcia regional parliament in a report approved in 2018. Since then, although a working group was set up by Mazarrón Council in late 2019 to include the regional and national bodies, no meetings of the three authorities have transpired, albeit Mazarrón Council have had meetings with the CHS.
The Rambla de los Aznares is a dry river bed that naturally floods during heavy rains, and the problem stems from actions taken by developer Grupo MASA in the construction of Sector D when the company built over an area which extends over 1.5km and affects over 500 properties. Despite legal action by the CHS and Mazarrón Council and the developer retro installing 3 channelling tubes, a solution which failed catastrophically in 2014, the problem still persists not only from potential flooding but also the situation where technically around 600 homes are built on government land which is causing administration problems in the completion of the Camposol urban plan being included in the General plan of the municipality of Mazarrón.
Numerous alternative plans and routes have been proposed over the years for the rechannelling of the watercourse but so far all have proved too expensive, unviable or fallen victim to politics.
Ideally a channelling plan could be agreed and approved by the CHS and the Regional Government and Mazarrón Council could come to an arrangement on financing the works.
