Alicante police dog sniffs out three German drug smugglers
The clever canine cornered the young foreigners when their bus stopped at Alicante station
Praise is being heaped on Local Police dog Kata this week after she sniffed out three German nationals whose bags were stuffed to the brim with kilos of narcotics. The trio of foreigners was trafficking the drugs by bus from Algeciras in Cádiz and they were nabbed when their coach pulled into Alicante station.
The two men and one woman were headed for the Costa Blanca capital on the Algeciras-Barcelona line on Monday July 8 but officials were already suspicious that there could be drugs on board. As a result, officers from both the Local and National Police, accompanied by clever canine Kata, were waiting when the Germans disembarked.
Kata sprung into action, inspecting all of the luggage on the bus until she honed in on three passengers, all aged between 10 and 27. The dog’s strong reaction told her handlers that they were dealing with a large quantity of drugs. The suspects were taken to a private room at Alicante station and their bags were examined.
It was discovered that, between them, they were carrying a large quantity of pills, hashish resin, buds of plant substance, 13 grams of cocaine, hashish oil and marijuana among their belongings.
The three young suspects were arrested on the spot but they refused to divulge where they had got the drugs from or where they were going with them.
However, investigators quickly established that the trio was part of an organised ring dedicated to selling narcotics on the Alicante nightlife circuit.
Drugs have been detected in passengers’ belongings on the Algeciras-Barcelona coach on several occasions in the past, mostly thanks to the specialised canine units, who are committed to keeping their community safe from the scourge of illegal substances.
