ARCHIVED - Aguilas unveils Carnival 2023 poster
The Carnival of Águilas is the most spectacular celebration of its kind in the Region of Murcia
While most of the Region of Murcia is occupied with the preparations for Christmas, the New Year and the arrival of the Three Kings, in Águilas preparations are already under way for the celebration of the spectacular Carnival in February and March next year!
Thursday saw the official presentation of the poster which will be promoting the 2023 Carnival, presided over by Mayoress Mari Carmen Moreno at the Carnival Museum. The importance of the celebrations is illustrated by the fact that also present was the local Councillor for Carnival, Cristóbal Casado!
The design chosen was created by painter Álvaro Peña and shows a group of revellers dancing in the “Rincón de los Casucos”. As is to be expected, it is an image full of colour and vivacity, characterizing the fiestas which take place next year between February 10 and March 10.
The Carnival of Águilas is the largest, most spectacular and most important in the Region of Murcia and in recognition of its status it has been awarded International Tourist Interest status. Apart from the colour and noise of the parades, other elements which make the fiestas so distinctive in Águilas include the descent of the Mussona, a hissing wild beast which personifies the duality of mankind and the natural world as it makes its way down from the castle into the town below, the battles with “cascarones” or eggs filled with confetti, “cuerva”, a potent party drink available throughout the town during the festivities, and the Drag Queen and bodypainting competitions.

Águilas boasts 28 kilometres of coastline, with many fine, sandy beaches, sheltered coves and unspoilt natural beaches. It is a great summer favourite with Spanish holidaymakers, so always has a superb programme of concerts and activities throughout the summer, as well as the biggest carnival in the Region of Murcia, 40 days before Semana Santa (Easter.)
Throughout the year it also has a number of museums and historical attractions, a castle with fabulous views overlooking the bay and several other points of interest, all of which make it an good place to visit for days out. Throughout the year the tourist office runs monthly guided tours and the route of the railways, which explores the railway history of the town.
The tourist information office is located in the Plaza de Antonio Cortijos, just a short walk from the sea front and Plaza de España, a cool, shaded space in which to enjoy a coffee.
