Molina de Segura bridge damaged in 2019 storms is finally reopened
The bridge between Molina and Alguazas was washed away by the horrendous DANA storm nearly four years ago
Vans on the bridge, during the load test that was carried out to check that the vehicles can passThe El Paraje bridge between Molina de Segura and Alguazas is finally back in service after 3 years and 8 months of waiting, since it was damaged it the severe 2019 gota fría storm of September 2019.That storm nearly four years ago caused the river to rise “reaching the water level of the bridge deck of El Paraje, which connects the two municipalities,” according to municipal sources from the Molina de Segura Town Hall.The canal itself, which provides irrigation water to around 1,000 local farmers, was out of order for five months before being fixed, but the bridge has taken longer to repair.“The bridge was displaced from its supports and erosion and undermining of its foundations occurred, which forced its immediate closure for safety reasons,” continued the Town Hall.It was then that “the Molina de Segura Town Council, in coordination with the Alguazas Town Council, drew up a repair project for the El Paraje bridge, which included the necessary actions for the underpinning of the foundations and the replacement of its supports, with the aim of putting it back into service, as well as increasing the hydraulic capacity of the Segura River as it passes around the bridge, by widening the riverbed 50 metres upstream and downstream of the bridge, following the indications of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura.”The works have cost around 600,000 euros, financed by both councils.Image: Ayuntamiento de Molina de Segura
