ARCHIVED - 2.4 million euros to modernize the shopping area of Jumilla
The national government is funding 80 per cent of the revamp of Jumilla town centre
The awarding of almost two million euros to the municipality of Jumilla to carry out the Consume Jumilla project, which consists of modernizing the shopping area of the town centre, has been confirmed this week by the central government of Spain, boosting efforts to promote spending and commerce in the locality.
Among the improvements envisaged are the widening of pavements and the creation of cycle lanes, and the national Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism has granted a total of precisely 1,980,349.60 euros to the scheme from the Next Generation-EU fund. The main streets affected by the modernization will be Avenida de Levante and Avenida Reyes Católicos, both of which will become single-lane one-way thoroughfares to make life easier for pedestrians and cyclists.
Other aspects of the plan include the creation of shade through the planting of trees and the installation of awnings in summer, the creation of a free car park near but not in the town centre and the implementation of underground rubbish containers.
In total the project is budgeted to cost 2,475,437 euros, with the Town Hall covering the 495,087 euros not financed by the national government, and it is hoped that it will be completed by June 2024.
